Mali, wood, fibres, 120 cm high. According to Huib Blom, these Satimbe masks represent the woman who stole it from the Andoumboulou (supernatural beings). One day whilst wandering in the bush, she stumbled upon them by surprise. Clad in her new attire, she returned home. Perceiving her disguise as a threat to male supremacy, the men from her village took away her newly found acquisitions and hid the masks. The woman was named Ya Sigine (the sister of the masks). Today, the Ya Sigine is a female mask initiate who plays an active role during masked rituals and masked dances are then performed at her funeral. Satimbe masks often have one arm that ends in a ladle. This utensil is the principal attribute of the Ya Sigine and she holds it in one hand during masked funerary dances. Her ladle is permeated with a form of energy which is perceived as dangerous to women.
