Nigeria/Cameroon, ochres, traces of blue, partial small wooden pegs. With an old Auction label or collection number. 57 cm high. These large ancestral figures are extremely rare and were often made in pairs. Typical of the early figures is the frontal protruding large head, and the high, back drawn shoulders. Placed in shrines outside the village, between civilization and the wilderness, the male figures characteristically show either the left hand or both hands raised to the chin in a thoughtful gesture linked to 'Suaga', the Mambila society of healers who also deal with justice, protection from evil forces, and ritual cleansing. The female figures often extend their arms above a pregnant belly.
