A Kuba 'Ngady Amwaash' Mask
RdCongo, wood, beads, fibres, 36 cm high. Representing 'Mweel' the mythological sister of 'Woot', the creators of the Kuba Kingdom, these masks honour the various roles women play in Kuba culture, gaady aMwash (meaning 'pawn woman of Mwash', called ngady aMwaash or ngady mwaash aMbooy in different sources) masks are used in dances by male members of society during funerals, initiation ceremonies and annual celebrations retelling the origin myth of the Kuba kingdom.
