An Important and Exceptional Fine Tutsi Basket

An Important and Exceptional Fine Tutsi Basket - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Rwanda, early 20th century, fibres, natural dyes, 44 cm high. The long-standing role of baskets and the basketry tradition has resulted in an art form that serves both utilitarian function and has an aesthetic beauty. The surface of this basket features geometric motifs in black. The black colouring was derived from boiling banana flowers, the black sap used as a dye. The red dye is from the root and seed of the urukamgi plant. By the 1930s, however, imported dyes expanded the palette to include colours like green, orange and mauve.
