Private Collection, Germany.
Johann Christian Wraske was born and grew up in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg as the son of a seafarer. Before studying painting at the Royal Prussian Academy of Art in Düsseldorf under the director Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow, he worked as a drawing teacher in an orphanage in his home town. Alongside his artistic career, he was interested in music and was active as a cantor in church.
Following his studies, he moved between Hamburg and Düsseldorf several times, where he became a member of the artists’ association Malkasten and focused on portraits and history paintings. His works were born from the creative milieu of the Düsseldorf School, which quickly became well known and initially focused on historical, partly mythological painting.
As a member of the gymnastics club, he portrayed, among others, the famous “father of gymnastics” Friedrich Ludwig Jahn.
