Maria Josefa was married to Frederick August, the son of the Polish King Augustus II Elector of Saxony, in 1719. After the election of her husband as King of Poland and Lithuania in 1733, she developed an intense political activity. She sought to have her husband elected emperor after the death of Emperor Charles VI in 1740, and once again after the death of Charles VII in 1745. Her influence on her husband's politics diminished significantly when Count Brühl became the king's confidant.
