School of Utrecht, 17th Century
Venus,
oil on canvas, 84 x 79 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, United Kingdom
The present picture is an intriguing Northern Caravaggesque work, likely depicting Venus (and Adonis), with the goddess of love mourning over her paramour’s corpse. An alternative subject of the current canvas, a fragment of a larger work, could possibly be Pyramus and Thisbe, however Pyramus is usually shown about to fall on her sword. In the present work, the depiction of Venus, who is swaddled in silk drapery, as opposed to being nude, is in keeping with other Utrecht School treatments of the goddess, such as Jan van Bijlert’s 1628 work Venus Chastising Cupid, conserved in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
