Anton Faistauer, who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1906 to 1909 and founded the "Neukunstgruppe" with Egon Schiele, returned to Salzburg after the war, where he lived in the so-called Leitner Villa between 1920 and 1927. This former annexe of Mönchsberg Castle, demolished in 1930, offered him a wide panoramic view of the city, which is captured in this painting.
