A Rare Empire Sewing Table,
Vienna, c. 1810/15, mahogany veneered softwood column frame on a round base, the column frame is interrupted by 2 arched supports, terminating in full-round carved and gold-painted eagle heads; the lower column base is wrapped by a gold-painted snake, carved lion paws matching the upper eagle heads, slightly bulging body for sewing accessories resting on the eagle heads, radiant veneer and segment marquetry top, maple veneered interior with compartments, maple veneered top with radiant veneer and segment marquetry decoration, height c. 79 cm, diameter c. 50 cm, well-kept condition with age-related traces of use. An almost identical piece of furniture is illustrated in the Künstlerhaus catalogue on the occasion of the exhibition "Moderne Vergangenheit 1800- 1900" (21.5.1981 - 9.8.1981).
