Provenance:
Private Collection, California
Galerie Christian Lethert, Cologne
Gerhard Richter’s series ‘Vermalung’ was created between 1971 and 1973 in various versions and colour constellations. The ‘Vermalung (Grau)’ offered here dates from 1971. Richter created a monochrome surface of grey oil paint applied by his finger. The series totals 150 unique works, 20 of which have been destroyed. Each unique piece is distinguished by the different course of the lines.
The finger-drawn lines form a network of dynamic movements. In this series, Gerhard Richter avoids creating a hierarchy between colour and surface; both elements dominate the picture surface equally.
