“This is not easy and deliberately not hedonistic art, but rather art that allows those who know how to contemplate it with long and patient attention to reach a condition of rare intoxication: that which is sometimes offered by the simplest and most arcane natural spectacles, such as crystalline microstructures, metal alloys, wood grains, geological stratifications: spectacles before which one must not ask the forbidden question of whether they are ‘beautiful’, but simply affirm that they are ‘necessary’.”
