A 19th century Dogon pair,
Mali. Wood, 53 cm high. This statue belongs to a group of about 12 statues ranging in size from about 40 cm to 70 cm, carved from a single piece of wood. They roughly date from the second half of the 19th century. The iconography is standard, a seated man and woman, with the man having his arm slung over the woman's shoulder. Unlike many other images of the Dogon, these images lack sacrificial patina and therefore most likely did not stand on altars. There has been much speculation about the significance of this group. A common interpretation of this iconography is that the man and woman are the "primordial couple" from Dogon mythography. This interpretation prompted Kate Ezra in her book on the Lester Wunderman collection at the Metropolitan Museum to write: "Since so little is actually known of the meaning and use of these figures, terms such as 'primordial couple' serve only to render the true state of our knowledge."
