A fine Yoruba Gelede mask with three birds,
Nigeria. Wood, 35 cm high. Amongst the Yoruba in Nigeria and in the neighboring state of Benin (formerly Dahomey), there exists a 'gelede cult' to honour women, mothers, and in general fertility. In this cult, men dance in pairs wearing colorful mask costumes with such crested masks on their heads. The dancers look out under the edge of the mask. Surmounted by three birds. (VJ)
