A rare Paiwan house panel.

A rare Paiwan house panel. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Wood, traces of pigments, 127 cm high. These panels are extremely rare architectural elements by the indigenous people in the hills of Taiwan, decimated by the Japanese invasion. The main house would have the two ancestral figures flanking the door of the house. They were carved and named for the ranking ancestors of the house. The serpents are the central mythological element, comparable to the Naga figures in Southeast Asia. Placed above the head of the ancestor, the female version would have a curled-up snake, whilst the male panels would show an extended one. Although the two panels are similar in style and represent male and female ancestors, their slight difference in scale precludes their being an ancestral couple from a single house. (VJ)

Provenance:
Collected in situ by Fred Ten Houten;
Dutch Missionary collection. A more recent example can be found in the Fowler Museum Accession Number: X72.835.
