From 1870, Count von Moltke, called Moltke the Elder, popularly known as “Der große Schweiger” (The Great Silent One) (Parchim 1800-1891 Berlin), Prussian Field Marshal, Chief of the German General Staff, played a major role in Prussia's success in the Wars of German Unification. Moltke was one of the most successful commanders of his time, and his concepts - not only in the military field - are still relevant today. His great-grandnephew Helmuth James Graf von Moltke was a resistance fighter against National Socialism.
