Large format vintage gelatin silver print on fiber-based paper, printed 1972, numbered "AS17 0587" in margin, 25,4 x 25,4 cm
This very rare and unreleased large-format vertical view captures exquisite details over the area of the 63-km Crater Macrobius (cut off at the bottom), the 20-km Crater Carmichael and 16-km Crater Hill (both to the top center). The image was taken from an altitude of 116 km.
Sun elevation: 25°.
Latitude / longitude: 19.7° N / 42.2° E.
“The biggest problem, going around the Moon [...] is knowing, instantaneously, when you look out of the window, Where am I looking? You can’t keep track of where you are. You’re always interrupted to do something else or whatever. You’ve got to tell yourself ahead of time to figure out where you are, so that you know where to start looking for the next landmark, the next thing that is coming up.”
