Karl Reinhold
(Vienna 1820-1887 Alt-Aussee)
Zedlitz Villa at Lake Altaussee with a view of Trisselwand, signed C. Reinhold faintly legible, tempera on paper, 18 x 21,8 cm, mounted, framed, (BH)
In 1847 and on the advice of his friend Adalbert Stifter, the poet Joseph Christoph von Zedlitz had this villa built as a so-called "lake house". Nikolaus Lenau and Franz Grillparzer were also frequent guests in this house. In 1862 Zedlitz sold the house to the reigning Prince Adolf Duke of Nassau, in 1893 it was handed over to Adolf Grand Duke of Luxembourg, who sold it to the Altaussee hotelier Michael Frischmuth. He had the "Seehaus" converted into the "Parkhotel", where his granddaughter, the well-known author Barbara Frischmuth, later grew up. In 1960 the hotel was demolished, today there is a wellness hotel in its place. In the book "Tage und Jahre, Sätze zur Situation” (Days and Years, Sentences on the Situation), published in 1971, Barbara Frischmuth describes the house as follows: : “The ground floor had walls made of stone, on the first and second floors the walls were made of wood and mortar. The roof had originally been also made of wood, but it was later replaced in places by durable material. ... Moritz von Schwind had painted frescoes on the whitewashed walls facing the park, in front of which bux tree rondeaus had been planted. In it you could sit on wooden benches and look at a fountain, which stood in the middle of geometrically laid out park paths in one half of the park ..."
