This painting depicts a half-dressed woman praying to Christ under a moonlit sky whilst assailed by carnal visions. The artist references a composition from 1872, now in the Musée d’Art et d’Industrie in Roubaix, in which the woman is dressed as a nun. A photograph of the painting was circulated as soon as it was exhibited in 1898 (Paris, Bibliothèque national de France, Département des Estampes et de la Photographie).
