The Polish painter Ludwig Gedlek was trained in Kraków by Władysław Łuszczkiewicz and moved to Vienna in 1873, where he completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. He remained in Vienna after his training, but maintained close contact with Poland. Paintings by Gedlek were first shown in Krakow as early as 1863; further exhibitions followed in Germany and Poland.
While in Vienna, Ludwig Gedlek painted scenes from his Polish homeland almost exclusively. Horses are omnipresent in his paintings; he often integrated them into rural settings or depicted them as spirited sledge teams. The artist also devoted himself to historical events such as Napoleon’s Russian campaign. Some of his paintings belong to the National Museum in Warsaw; his works can also be found in many galleries and private collections.
