A Filigree Tiara

metal, parcel-gilt, fresh water cultured pearls, imitation stones and pearls, length c. 18 cm, height c. 4.5 cm, hair weave, workmanship first third of the 20th century, 26.9 g

Pinchbeck was probably the most famous gold imitation in the 18th and 19th centuries. With a predominant proportion of copper and only a small proportion of zinc, a brass alloy was produced that is visually very similar to authentic gold. Pinchbeck was often used for magnificent longcase clocks or furniture applications. It was also used in goldsmithing to produce inexpensive yet very impressive pieces of jewellery. Brass alloys such as Pinchbeck are easy to work with and easy to polish.
From the 18th century onwards, floral motifs were particularly popular for headdresses.
A similar affinity and fascination with nature are evident not just in the realm of visual arts but also in the jewellery craftsmanship of the 19th century.
After wigs went out of fashion since the French Revolution, especially hair combs were worn on festive occasions.
Pinchbeck jewellery is a popular collector’s item today due to the rarity of the pieces.
