Circle of Anthony van Dyck
(Antwerp 1599–1641 London)
Portrait of Jean-Charles de Cordes,
oil on canvas, 55 x 46 cm, framed
The present painting relates to a composition in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (inv. no. 2618) that used to be attributed to Peter Paul Rubens and/or Anthony van Dyck (together with its pendant, the portrait of the sitter’s wife, Jacqueline van Caestre). Modern research is inclined to attribute the work to Van Dyck. A further version in Warsaw, preserved in the Royal Lazienki Museum, is probably based on a lost original.
Jean Charles (Jan Karel) de Cordes came from a noble family based in the County of Hainaut. They became one of the wealthiest families in Antwerp.
