Gennaro Ruo

(Naples 1812–1884)
A Scene from the Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio, signed, dated Gen: Ruo 1855, oil on canvas, 108 x 150 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, Italy.

In the present work, Gennaro Ruo was inspired by the great Italian medieval author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) who wrote a collection of 100 tales called Decameron. Boccaccio’s Decameron was written in about 1350 during the outbreak of the plague in Florence. It relates the story of seven women and three men who fled into the countryside to escape the Black Death in town. Each person in the group tells a story on each of ten days, resulting in a hundred tales on themes such as religion, death, love, fortune, tragedy, wisdom, and wit. It provides timeless lessons on the power of storytelling. Here we can see most of the members of the group sitting and listening to the latest tale.
Gennaro Ruo was indeed greatly interested in medieval literature. Painted in 1855, this is perhaps one of his most important works.
