An Elegant French Salon Table,


Paul Sormani, Paris, after a model by Bernard II van Risenburgh from the 18th century, crafted in the second half of the 19th century, oakwood frame on cabriole legs, rosewood veneer, cross-grained marquetry with several precious woods, polished finish in traditional artisanal technique, one drawer, delicately chased gilt fittings, top with moulded edging, embossed lock “P. Sormani a Paris”, 72.5 x 64 x 39 cm, in beautiful professionally restored condition. (MIN)

Paul SORMANI (1817-1877) founded his company in 1847, subsequently also taking over his brother's business in 1858. Above all, the extremely precise construction of his products, always made in oak, was rightly regarded as unsurpassed. In 1855, 1862 and 1867 Sormani participated in the World's Fairs in Paris and London, winning numerous awards and medals. The company was commercially very successful. Shortly before the founder's death in 1877, up to 300 craftsmen were employ on 10 rue Charlot. From 1877, the widow Ursule Marie Philippine and his son Paul-Charles continued the business under the name "Sormani Veuve et Fils". This lasted until 1914. In 1889, the company won the Grand Prix at the World's Fair in Paris.
