A Walzenkrug Stein with Terrace Decor, Meissen c. 1740,

porcelain, gold-heightened with underglaze blue decoration, cylindrical body with retracted rim and band handle, the front side with a fence on a rock and two chrysanthemum branches, the reverse side with a blooming branch with butterfly on a meadow, the rim with all-round decoration of flowers in reserves, the handle with a floral tendril, height 16 cm, diameter 11 cm, under the handle underglaze blue crossed swords mark probably with blue painter mark K and impressed no. 20, gilding partly scuffed, (GO)

This East Asian decoration, executed with blue pigment, subtly summarises a typical Chinese park or garden landscape in its design elements such as the flowering plants, the rocks and the architecture. This motif was derived from imported Chinese porcelain and further developed in the Meissen manufactory into this terrace decoration, the onion pattern or the table decoration. The blue painter's mark K is associated with the blue painters Peter Kolmberger (active 1731-1779) and Johann David Kretzschmar (active 1726-1752). On the grounds of the individual elements of the motif and the painting style, Kretzschmar’s authorship seems more likely. The gold shading was applied outside the manufactory in the manner of the Ferner workshop.
