Field Marshal Archduke Charles - a sketch in his own hand of the Battle of Wagram on 5/6 July 1809,

pencil and ink on paper, 24 x 40 cm, framed, glazed, (Lu)

In terms of military history, this is a highly interesting sketch by the Archduke of the troop formation and movements at the Battle of Wagram. The Archduke made this sketch in pencil during the battle in order to record the current troop movements and to be able to give further instructions. The drawings were partly retraced in ink by a second hand, probably shortly after the battle, and supplemented with troop and place names. Therefore, the following old inscription can be found in the upper right area: “Von S. k. H. dem durchlauchtigsten Herrn Erzherzog Carl selbst eigenhändig entworfen” [Drawn by His Royal Highness the Archduke Charles himself]. The left margin features the “ordre de bataille” on the day of the battle. The inscriptions by a second hand were probably made by an officer from the Archduke’s staff shortly after the battle. A very important object for Austrian military history.
