Princess Sophie in Bavaria (1847-1897), married Duchess of Alencon. Princess Sophie was the sister of the future Empress Elisabeth of Austria and became engaged to King Louis II of Bavaria in February 1867. This bust was commissioned by King Louis II on the occasion of his engagement. The bust served as a model for the marble version by Johann Nepomuk Hautmann, which is now in the possession of the Bavarian Palace Department (Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung) at Herrenchiemsee Palace.
