NASA (Apollo 8)
The official emblem of Apollo 8, humankind's first mission to another world, December 1968
Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based paper, printed 1968, numbered "NASA S-68-51093" in red in top margin, with NASA caption (MSC) and "A KODAK PAPER" watermark on verso, 20,3 x 25,4 cm
Apollo 8 mission was to break the grip of Earth gravity and to fly around the Moon and back.
Apollo 8 had been scheduled to test the Lunar Module in Earth orbit, but it was not ready to fly. So the schedule was juggled and William Anders, James Lovell and Frank Borman became the first astronauts to ride the gigantic Saturn V booster into space.
[NASA caption] APOLLO 8 INSIGNIA---Emblem of the Apollo 8 lunar orbit mission. The crew will consist of Astronauts Frank Borman, commander; James A. Lovell Jr., command module pilot; and William A. Anders, lunar module pilot.
“It was an exploration mission. We took the human intellect and the human vision, the
human mind, 240,000 miles away from its home. That was the importance. Whether we found a rock there or not was of no importance.”
Frank Borman (Chaikin, Voices, p. 184)
