Leopold Museum

As a long-standing partner, the Dorotheum sponsors exhibitions at the Leopold Museum every year.

The Leopold Museum houses one of the most important collections of Austrian art from the second half of the 19th century to modernity worldwide. With over 8,000 pieces it offers the unique opportunity of closely experiencing Vienna’s artistic development around 1900.

The Leopold Museum collection comprises important pieces by artists like Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt und was created by the artistic passion and expertise of the couple Rudolf and Elisabeth Leopold. The Leopold’s vision and decisiveness led to the establishment of a comprehensive collection, despite the social opposition of the 1960s.

With over 220 works, the Leopold Museum today has the largest Egon Schiele collection worldwide. In 1994 a considerable part of the collection was added to the Leopold Museum’s private foundation which enabled the public access and scientific examination of Schiele’s works.

The Leopold Museum was opened in the MuseumsQuartier in 2001 and was led by Rudolf Leopold until his death in 2010. The museum serves not only to maintain and present its collection, but it also strives to continuously expand it. In this way the museum meets its ambition of wanting to document and mediate Austrian art history in its diversity and development.
