Secession Podcast: Members is a series of conversations featuring members of the Secession. This episode is a conversation between the artist Werner Würtinger and the artist Claudia Märzendorfer. This conversation was recorded during several meetings in January and February 2024 in Werner Würtinger's studio in the Prater Ateliers.
Werner Würtinger (b. Hallein, Austria, 1941) is a sculptor who lives and works in Vienna. After completing his studies in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, he went on to teach there for almost thirty years; with his gift for integration, he was a formative figure for several generations of young artists at his alma mater, where he was vice rector in 2001–2002. He was president of the Vienna Secession from 1995 until 1999 and was named an honorary member in 2021. He has edited numerous publications. In 2012, the book Arkadien und angenehme Feinde: Die Bildhauerateliers im Prater, released by Revolver Publishing, Berlin (2011), won an award as one of the year’s finest books from Austria.
Claudia Märzendorfer (b. Vienna, 1969) is a visual artist. She studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In her works, she dismantles situations and constructed conditions and reassembles them in new form, at least in the mind. She sees the world as (her) material. The resulting images are meticulously researched yet pack a pop punch that makes them immediately intelligible. Two central aspects of her oeuvre are time and music, which the artist regards as the only neutral currencies.
