Death and the Girl is a sculptural adaptation of the lithograph “Gummitod” from the “Randolectil” cycle, a series of etchings bearing the name of a tranquilliser, in which Alfred Hrdlicka confronts mental illnesses and abnormalities at the end of the 1960s.
“The series is introduced with a ‘Prologue’ of striptease scenes which increasingly ‘degenerate’. With “Gummitod”, the artist poses the question of how close the world of experience of so-called well people is to that of the mentally ill.”
