European Private Collection - directly from the artists
Antonio Barrese, Alfonso Grassi, Gianfranco Laminarca and Alberto Marangoni formed MID in 1964 and were active as a group in Milan until 1972.
MID, as an abbreviation for “Mutamento, Immagine, Dimensione” (engl. “Mutation, Image, Dimension”) stands at the beginning of multi-media art and for the breakthrough into electronic technologies in art.
In a similar fashion to Kinetic or Programmed Art, MID brought into being purely abstract, optical phenomena of perception, thereby drawing on the latest achievements in lighting technology, cybernetics, information aesthetics, gestalt psychology, and visual communication. The areas of work and research extended from object to structure, from synthetic image to ambient synaesthetic configuration, from installations to screen art. The viewer should be incorporated as an active element into the realisation of the work in space and time. (silvanaeditoriale.it)
