This creation of fashion belongs to the years during which Balla turned his interest to the elegant Roman scene which orbited the drawing rooms of Marchioness Casati, Countess Lovatelli and the Alatri family. The colours and iconography of the female figures with their dogs recall the acclaimed portrait of Marchioness Casati with her greyhound. The background is composed of geometric elements in various shades of grey which intersect with a bright yellow, creating a three-dimensional effect. The composition of the backdrop recalls a study by Balla for the Bionbruna painting in 1926 (today located at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome), which depicts Ms Alatri, who was known to change her hair colour according to the fickle and changeable dictates of fashion.
