Text for Herbert Brandl 1993

The content of Herbert Brandl’s colour palette makes one think that everything that is optically perceptible has some colour. But colour, as such, is also available commercially at any time. In contrast to form, which is always evoked by means of a prop. Colour indeed has volume, yet only in a packaged form – here it becomes surface. The neighbour goes shopping and below Arnulf or Albert, loudly burbling just about endlessly, passes water.
Luise to Hans-Peter: have you got a favourite colour? Hans-Peter to Josef (condescendingly): Did have – and it was a greyish pink. Pink with grey. Pink that sort of tends towards orange. I also used this colour for years, as well as luminous red, but very muted. Luise (pointedly): How do you deploy the colour in your work? Josef: In a dilemma. I try to overcome my ‘cowardice’ in the use of materials, and deploy the colour. And then the next problems arise...
