[...] one of the best representatives of the art of this period, who as early as 1921-22 had turned towards abstraction. [...] Even if Hartung displays different styles which alternate the predominance of calligraphy and painting, he remains faithful to an absolute detachment not only from implicit figurality, but also from that limbo of shapeless chromaticism, seen in the work of many Tachistes, in which one can detect the emergence of ambiguous figural forms.
