Lot No. 183 -

Franz Anton Maulbertsch

Franz Anton Maulbertsch - Collection Reinhold Hofstätter

(Langenargen 1724–1796 Vienna)
The Holy Trinity with the Madonna and Saints, oil on panel, 95 x 70 cm, framed

The present painting is accompanied by a certificate issued by Monika Dachs-Nickel, Vienna (June 2015). She writes: “The already-established connection with the ceiling fresco in the Eger Lyceum chapel is correct, in the broadest sense, yet – apart from the depiction of the Trinity – the differences outweigh the similarities. This is hardly surprising, given that both in Maulbertsch’s overall designs, but also in his specifications, one finds that some figures have not yet been included, or given their definitive place within the composition. With relation to the ceiling fresco in Eger, the sketch showing the angel with the book, for example, which certainly comes from Maulbertsch, is preserved in the Albertina Museum. The present sketch may therefore stand in connection both with the genesis of the fresco in Eger, as well as with another smaller project, undertaken at the same time, whose execution we no longer know anything about.”
