Attributed to Balthasar Permoser (1651–1732), Double bust – Pain and Dismay,
white marble worked on both sides, the base of yellow Portuguese marble, height 97 cm, width 65 cm, depth 30 cm.
The front and back display two different faces, representing the human feelings of pain and dismay. Both the expressive facial features and tangled hair of the personification of pain show similarities to the Bust of Marsyas (c. 1680, Metropolitan Museum, New York), which can be attributed with certainty to Permoser.
