School of Valencia c. 1540

School of Valencia c. 1540 - Collection Reinhold Hofstätter

Christ Carrying the Cross, oil on panel, 93 x 54 cm, framed

In the fifteenth century, Valencia became one of the most densely populated cities on the Iberian Peninsula. However, it also became one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean, and thereby an important centre for trade and finance. Valencia saw Spain’s first stirrings of the new artistic era of the Renaissance, as a result of artists arriving from the Italian territories of the King of Aragón. Italian artists and Spanish artists were engaged in a lively form of exchange throughout the entire sixteenth century: Italian artists sent their works to Valencia and thereby influenced the painting style of the city, while Spanish artists trained in Italy and brought the fashions of the Italian Renaissance back to their hometown. This painting is a vivid example of the art produced within the cultural centre of Valencia, which was subject to various influences, during the transitional period between the Late Gothic and the Renaissance. The Gothic framing of this altar piece demonstrates that Gothic traditions were still adhered to in the sixteenth century.
