An executioner’s sword,
Bohemia, 17th century, 76 cm long and 6.5 cm large, double-edged blade, the blade on both sides fullered and engraved with wheel and gallows and ‘IHS’, as well as the inscription: ‘B. F. Helbich Scharffrichter zu Lauban und Reichenberg’ [B. F. Helbich executioner in Lauban and Reichenberg], straight facetted iron cross-piece with leaf décor, pear-shaped, facetted pommel, also with leaf décor, two fluted hilt rings, the wood of the grip wrapped with plaited cord, blackened, the blade scarred and jagged in places, the hilt displays black colour residues.
