Lot No. 396

Roman School, 18th Century - a pair (2)

Roman School, 18th Century - a pair (2) - Old Master Paintings

The expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael; and
Hagar and the Angel,
oil on canvas, 98.5 x 75 cm and 97.5 x 75 cm, framed, a pair (2)

Provenance:
sale, Sotheby’s, London, 13 December 2001, lot 77 (as Roman School, first half of the 18th Century);
sale, Christie’s, New York, 26 January 2011, lot 158 (as Jean Francois Millet, called Francisque Millet)

The two paintings, originally conceived as pendants, depict episodes from Genesis (21, 8-12). The first shows Abraham who, forced by his wife Sarah, banishes Hagar, with whom he conceived Ishmael. The second shows Hagar lost in the Paran desert being rescued by an Angel who shows her the location of a spring that saves her dying son.

The artist who painted these two landscapes was influenced by Gaspard Dughet and Claude Lorrain which is especially apparent in the rendering of the vegetation and the use of the light. The pastel tones of the sky and the deep green of the trees are also reminiscent of Jan Frans van Bloemen, who was active in Rome between the late seventeenth and the early eighteenth centuries.
