(Antwerp 1620–1678)
The Judgement of Solomon,
oil on canvas, 110 x 188 cm, framed
Provenance:
Belgian nobility
Theodor Boeyermans was mainly a painter of history, mythological and religious scenes. He also received important commissions for churches in his native Antwerp, Malines and the Kempen area. His style was very much influenced by Rubens and Van Dyck. However, as is evident in the present composition, he had a darker palette than his Antwerp colleagues. He also employed a very expressive style which echoes the emotions shown in Van Dyck’s paintings.
