We are grateful to Ellis Dullaart of the RKD, The Hague, for confirming the attribution of the present painting. It is registered in the RKD database under no. 262126. Walther Bernt writes that Jacob Duck was: “A Dutch genre painter whose palette is as elegant as that of W. Duyster and who is superior to Anthonie Palamedesz. and Simon Kick, to whose art his own is thematically related [...] His trademark is a delicate greyish brown tone from which the powerful local colours of precious garments or a silk military flag shine forth vigorously.”
The painting is published in the new monograph on Jacob Duck (J. Rosen, Jacob Duck, Catalogue Raisonné, Zeist 2017, p. 255) as number 156. Rosen dates the painting to circa 1635.
