The present painting comes with a certificate issued by Klaus Ertz (March 2017). Ertz writes: “The present painting appears to be in a very good state. The colours give a brilliant and fresh impression and are particularly well preserved in their original condition in the figures.” He also points out that van Cleve painted very few landscapes in their own right which makes the present lot a rare example in his oeuvre. Ertz dates the painting to the late 1570s.
