(Delft 1612 - after 1656)
A still life with game including wildfowl with fish and fruit,
signed lower left (in the table): H Steenwijck,
oil on panel, 81.5 x 114.5 cm, framed
The present painting, which is signed, is a characteristic work by the painter, who in his lifetime acquired fame for his still lifes in bright greys and browns. The light hitting the table from the upper left corner and causing the various elements of the still life to stand out against the dark wall, creates an intense atmosphere and simultaneously serves as a pretext for the painter to display his technical skills in the rendering of surface textures, ranging from shimmering fish skin to translucent grapes.
