![Adriaen van Ostade - Old Master Paintings Adriaen van Ostade - Old Master Paintings](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A170425/normal/adriaen-van-ostade-1095484.jpg)
(Haarlem 1610–1685)
A tavern scene,
signed upper left: AV (ligated) OSTADE,
oil on panel, 25.2 x 20.7 cm, framed
Provenance:
probably Madame de Cossé, Paris, Auktion, 11 November 1778;
probably Collection Robert de Saint Victor, Paris, sale, 26 November 1882;
Hans Oppenheimer, London;
sold by the latter on 25 November 1949 to Herbert N. Bier;
acquired from the latter by Paul Stephens and thence by descent.
Literature:
C. Hofstede de Groot, Catalogue Raisonné of the Most Eminent Dutch Painters of the 17th Century, 1913, vol. III, p. 362, no. 712
A dendrochronological examination of the present panel reveals that the tree was felled around 1638. This implies that the painting was probably executed around 1657.
Adriaen van Ostade was one of the leading narrators of country life in the Netherlands. His rustic scenes are in the moralising tradition of seventeenth-century Flemish prototypes and were meant to demonstrate a virtuous behaviour. In his later works, Van Ostade lent more dignity to his peasant figures. They were no longer satirised, but intended to emphasise the simple pleasures of life in the countryside.
