Lot No. 6

Attributed to Ambrosius Benson

Attributed to Ambrosius Benson - Old Master Paintings

(born 1490/1500–1550 Bruges)
The Adoration of the Magi,
oil on panel, 90 x 63.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private European collection

The composition of the present painting is based on Gerard David’s Adoration of the Magi in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Benson treated this subject matter repeatedly. Max J. Friedländer identified the prototype of the composition (which had repeatedly also been attributed to Adriaen Isenbrant) as the painting sold by Graupe, Berlin, 25 January 1935, lot 6. Further examples featuring shaped tops were preserved in the Figdor Collection in Vienna (sold by Cassirer, Berlin, in 1930) and in the collection of Harry Graf Kessler in Munich. Another version of this composition, in the extended form of a triptych, was sold at auction at Sotheby’s, London, 8 July 2015, lot 34 (as a work by Adriaen Isenbrant). Till Holger Borchert, whom we thank for his kind assistance, sees a greater closeness here to Isenbrant than to Benson.
