An old sword with a long, single-edged, only slightly curved blade skillfully crafted using pamor technique, with a broad, fullered back of the blade. The thick, curved hilt of the sword is simple, smooth and attractively crafted, made from black precious wood. The hilt base and ring are set in finely engraved brass. The same is true of the ‘mouth’ of the bivalve wooden sheath, which is affixed with eight wrappings made of brass wire.
The lower ‘shoe’ of the sheath is made of an oval ring made of ivory, which narrows in a conical shape. A minor crack to the hilt, with old restoration (glued). Otherwise no damage.
Length: c. 66 cm (sword in sheath). Between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian private collection.
Lit.: ‘Traditional Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago’ von Albert G. van Zonneveld, S. 102/103, Abb. 395, 396, 397, 401, 402.
