Indonesia, Java: an old kris dagger with a wooden hilt and sheath. An Indonesian dagger, known as a ‘kris’. With an old, straight double-edged blade.
The hilt (without hilt ring) is carved from brown precious wood, with triangular ‘trumpal’ motifs and floral volutes and spirals in relief.
The wooden sheath features a ‘boat’ (‘wranka’) in the Yogyakarta or Surakarta style, made from dark brown precious wood (lacquered). The entire length of the scabbard is cloaked in flat sheet metal made of silver alloy. Minor damage: one area of loss and a repair to the covering on the sheath, some rust to the tip of the blade, the hilt ring (‘mendak’) is missing. A visibly old object, with noticeable traces of use.
Length: 38 cm. Between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
