Laos: a sitting Buddha figure made of bronze, with the remains of original gilding.
A relatively small old Buddha figure in typical Laotian style, cast in bronze.
The Buddha sits in the earth-touching gesture (‘bhumisparsa mudra’) on a simple smooth base. His hairstyle features dot-in-circle decoration, with a teardrop-shaped ‘ushnisha’ (wisdom bump) on the top of his head, long ears and a simple monk’s habit. The visibly very old figure shows remains of the casting core in the middle, a crack to the front of the base, a casting defect to the inside of the right elbow, and some small dents due to age.
The exterior surface of the Buddha figure still has visible residues of its previous complete gilding. A piece with an impressive, shiny and smooth ‘worn’ patina.
Height: 18 cm; width: c. 12 cm. 18th century or earlier. (ME)
