Lot No. 306

Burma: a large round box for storing foodstuffs, with an insert.

Burma: a large round box for storing foodstuffs, with an insert. - Tribal Art

The lid and exterior are painted with scenes, bands and inscriptions in red, blue and white on a black background. A beautiful, old piece. A typical tall round Burmese box for storing foodstuffs. Divided into two containers by an interior insert (separated for rice and vegetables). Containers such as this one were woven from thin, flexible strips of bamboo, covered with a few coats of lacquer and braced (exterior: black lacquer as the base coat, interior: red lacquer). The lid and the broad, continuous band around the sides depict large, figural scenes painted with fine brushstrokes in red, blue and white. Additionally, there are encircling bands featuring painted leafy tendrils and medallions with Burmese characters. This is visibly an unusually old, very well preserved object with just a few hairline cracks due to age and minor areas of loss. Otherwise, no damage.
Height: 23 cm;
Diameter: 23 cm. Between c. 1900 and the early 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.
