Burma (Myanmar): 5 so-called ‘opium weights’ from Burma.
The term ‘opium weight’ is not, of course, completely accurate: in reality, they were part of a normal weighing system used in Burmese markets to weigh out foodstuffs and everyday items – and some are still used for this today.
The present five weights are cast from bronze and with four depictions of the figure of the holy duck ‘Hintha’ and one depiction of the mythical lion ‘To’. All five items are old. The edges have been worn down into a round shape as a result of protracted use.
Height: from 4.5 cm to 11 cm. 19th century. (ME)
Provenance: Viennese private collection.
